ABOUT STEVE WILSON
Steve Wilson is a Brighton-based Illustrator. With the vast amount of opportunities arising through the technologies that support design work, Wilson is lucky to have a great deal of freedom throughout his career. The only limitations he finds are those boundaries he sets for himself as a type of artist in order to achieve his goals and challenges.
When discussing how he creates his work, Wilson explains how he handles both tight briefs he receives from clients, as well as occasions where he is given free reign of the interpreted piece. “I seem to get briefs that cover the whole spectrum, from the very specific where it can feel that I am merely realizing an art directors
idea to entirely open where I might be given complete free reign…
A few limitations can help to focus the mind and help you get started but at the same time too many limitations can be suffocating and limit the results and leave you feeling merely like a tool the art director is using.”
He expresses that a balance between the two is the ideal state to work in, free reign to explore the work, whilst limited to keeping within a broad brief, “I do consider myself a commercial Illustrator for my sins so I am ‘trained’ to work to some sort of brief so I can find it difficult to work completely without restriction. When I do personal work I still subconsciously have part of my brain thinking how it might be used commercially, it’s just a way of thinking that has become ingrained in me.”
Wilson describes his personal creative style as “somewhere between pop and psychedelia” (that being, if he had to use generalized terms). As he is such a free flowing, experimental Illustrator, he continues to try and move past these generalizations, again giving himself even more challenges. Just like anyone who has passion for what they do; his reward is the fact that he truly enjoys it. We’d just like
